SYB REC PROGRAMS
A "REC-FIRST" BASKETBALL PROGRAM
At the heart of the Sandwich Youth Basketball philosophy is the "REC first" mentality. This approach means that the organization prioritizes the Town Recreational (REC) league as the foundation of its operations. While many sports organizations focus heavily on elite competition, SYB believes that a strong recreational base is essential for a healthy community. By focusing on the REC league first, SYB ensures that basketball remains accessible to everyone, promoting physical health and well-being for a broad spectrum of local youth.
Choosing a REC-first program offers several distinct advantages for families in Sandwich:
- Inclusivity: Every child who wants to play get sthe opportunity to join a team and see significant court time.
- Stress-Free Environment: The focus remains on learning and enjoyment rather than high-stakes pressure.
- Community Building: Players compete with and against their school classmates, strengthening local friendships.
- Skill Foundation: Recreational play allows beginners to develop fundamental skills without the fear of making mistakes.
- Balance: The REC schedule is designed to respect family time, making it easier for kids to stay active without overwhelming their weekly calendars.
By emphasizing these values, SYB creates a safe and inclusive environment where kids can build character and confidence.

REGULAR SEASON REC LEAGUE
WHERE: All practices and games are held at Forestdale & Oak Ridge schools.
WHEN: Season runs from early November to the week prior to February break (No games over the Thanksgiving and Christmas school breaks. If schools are closed (holiday, snow days, etc.), SYB activities are canceled.)
WHO: All interested players in grades 1 thru 8 are grouped into combined grade divisions as follows:
1st / 2nd Grade Clinics
For our youngest athletes, the journey begins with instructional clinics. These sessions are held on Saturdays throughout the season and are designed to introduce the very basics of basketball - dribbling, passing, and shooting - in a high-energy, fun setting. There are no formal games or standings at this level; instead, the focus is entirely on getting kids comfortable with a ball in their hands and teaching them the joy of movement.
Exact times will be dependent the # of teams in the other age groups, but traditionally the 1-hour clinics run from mid-day to early/mid afternoon.
3rd / 4th & 5th / 6th Grade Divisions
Once players reach the 3rd grade, they transition into the formal 'Rec' league divided by grade level and gender. In these divisions, players are placed on teams and participate in regular practices and games. While the competition becomes more organized, the core focus remains on skill development and equal participation. Coaches are encouraged to rotate players through different positions, allowing everyone to explore all aspects of the game.
These divisions will have one 1-hour practice a week (normally Monday or Tuesday) with games on Saturdays. In general, the younger age groups are slotted earlier time practice slots beginning at 5:30pm.
For Saturday games, we flip the schedule and start the older groups earlier and ‘get younger’ as the day progresses. This is done in an attempt to minimize schedule conflicts for older players (grades 5th thru 8th) that might also play travel basketball, etc. Actual game times will be dependent on the total number of teams formed across all age groups.
7th/8th Grade Divisions
Over the years, SYB has learned that middle school-aged players often have many other commitments that makes getting good attendance at practices a challenge. As such, 7th/8th Grade divisions will have an initial practice on Thursday of the 1st week of the season and then shift to Thursday night games only for the remainder of the season.
SUMMER HOOPS
WHERE: All games are held at the Sandwich Center for Active Living (CAL)
WHEN: 6 weeks (mid-July to mid-August)
WHO: All interested players in rising grades 3 thru 8. Players are grouped into combined grade divisions (3/4, 5/6, and 7/8)
FORMAT:
- No practices
- No fixed teams — players practice and scrimmage in weekly groups.
- Games include referees and scorekeepers.
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR ALL REC PROGRAMS
- SYB does not allow kids to ‘play up’ in the town ‘rec’ program. As SYB does not hold tryouts or evaluations for these divisions, this is simply an issue of fairness.
- Sandwich residents and children who attend Sandwich Public Schools are given priority during open registration; out-of-town players will initially be waitlisted until it is determined that space is available in a particular division.
